The highly reliable and low maintenance hydraulic brakes HS33 from Magura keep the Biosphere Tour's bike in a safe distance from ditches and trees.

Repairing bicycles, opening cans or simply slicing bread - there's a lot possible with the Swisstool from Victorinox.

The Globetrotter Equipment Store in Berlin allowed a discount for the Biosphere Tour's equipment, slightly higher than usual.

Logistic Support

Although fascinated by the project idea, the UNESCO MAB Secretariat in Paris hesitated in officially supporting the Biosphere Tour, due to the tragic death of a French UNESCO cyclist in 1998. However, the Secretariat's assistance in establishing contacts to biosphere reserves and regional bureaus, as well as its letter of recommendation turned out very helpful during the whole journey.

Hospitalityclub and Couchsurfing, the two largest hospitality exchange networks, provided the platform for the most enriching experiences during the trip. 16 hosts in ten countries showed me how good it feels to come as a stranger and leave as a friend.

Members of the German Bicycle Travel Forum provided invaluable advice about bicycle purchase, security and route planning. After an accumulated 15000km of own bicycle travel, I hope I can offer the same service in the future.

Aside from building an incredibly reliable bicycle for the Biosphere Tour (two punctures and nothing else during a journey of 12000km), the bicycle constructors from the Radspannerei in Berlin also provided a three-hours do-it-yourself bicycle maintenance course which left me capable of repairing about everything.
